Notice from the Mid-Michigan District Health Department

School Administrators were recently advised by the Mid-Michigan District Health Department of an increased rate of pertussis (whooping cough) in Clinton County over the past month.  Jennifer Morse, MD, Medical Director stated that:

Pertussis can be a very serious illness, especially in the very young who haven't had the opportunity to be completely protected through immunization.  The disease is caused by bacteria that are spread through sneezing and coughing.  The time between exposure to the bacteria and the onset of disease symptoms is usually between 7 and 10 days, but in rare cases, it can take up to 3 weeks.

For more information about symptoms, vaccinations, etc., please visit the following website.  You may also contact Becky Stoddard, RN, Public Health Nurse III, (989) 227-3111, bstoddard@mmdhd.org.
